rehabilitation
A planned and implemented program intended to help a patient recovering from illness, injury, or a medical treatment become more independent in dealing with the illness or injury on their own. Rehabilitation often gets the patient to regain strength or relearn a skill that was lost, sometimes through another means than what the patient was used to. Examples of skills include the ability to dress oneself or being able to speak. In critical care, rehabilitation is important because patients are sometimes bedridden for a long period of time and may need to regain the weight they lost or loosen their muscles from being in the same position for too long. Rehabilitation can be a continued inpatient or outpatient procedure in a hospital or the patient's home.
