The act of optimizing the overall health of a person. Nursing encompasses patients of all ages, ethnicities, and conditions. It involves helping already-healthy patients stay that way or ill and injured patients recover through constant monitoring of their needs and wants. Nursing also involves promoting the patient's understanding of medical treatment and determining when assistance is needed from other health care professionals. Examples of nursing include taking blood pressure, placing catheters, or teaching patients how to give themselves a shot.
