life support
The medical equipment and treatment used to assist or replace a patient's failing bodily function. Life support is used temporarily until the body can resume normal functioning, but it can be used for years if the patient is in a persistent vegetative state. In this situation, an advance directive may call for the patient to remain on life support indefinitely or have life support discontinued (frequently referred to as "pulling the plug" on all life-sustaining equipment being used on the patient).
