emergency department
Often referred to as the emergency room (ER). Emergency department physicians and nurses treat patients who suffer from relatively minor emergencies (sprained ankles, broken arms) to those with major problems, including heart attack, knife or gunshot wounds, or drug overdoses. The physicians and nurses will stabilize patients and transport them to the intensive care unit (ICU) or another area of the hospital for further treatment. The emergency department is not the same as the ICU, where critically ill and injured patients stay for long-term rather than short-term treatment.
