critical care unit (CCU)
Often referred to as the
intensive care unit (ICU)
.
Though the two terms are interchangeable, t
he CCU, when set apart from the ICU, is an area in the hospital where where
critically ill or injured
patients are
medically treated
based mostly on protocol. Common CCUs include the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU), the Neurosurgery Intensive Care Unit (NSICU), the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the Coronary Care Unit (also CCU), and the burn or trauma unit.
Patients in the ICU, on the other hand, are treated more holistically; their care takes into consideration any deviations they have from what the average person experiencing their condition would, incorporates the opinion of a
multiprofessional
staff and the latest technology or theories.
